Detroit Unsure Over the Future of Green Cars

The U.S. auto industry remains unsold over the future of "green cars" such as electrics and hybrids, as carmakers struggle with the first steps in a market most agree shows promise over the long term.

According to a recent article in Industry Week, automakers wheeled out a variety of new hybrids and plug-in electrics at the annual Detroit auto show last week, touting their great energy savings along with new, freshened designs. But despite that apparent commitment, behind the scenes, the manufacturers remain split between doubts and optimism over their potential.

Ten years after the Toyota Prius hybrid swept into the market, only about 3% of all cars sold in the United States are electric or gas-electric hybrids. The article goes into some of the reasons why the hype over green cars may be cooling down. One challenge has been that hybrids, which have both traditional combustion engines and electric engines, are more costly because they require two powertrains.

I think the recession we are

I think the recession we are dealing with should also be considered, people are more likely to keep their old cars and buy any necessary auto parts to keep them running than buy a new hybrid or electric car. This kind of behavior is to be expected though, the electric car sales will go up as soon as the economy recovers.

I'm not happy to say it but I was expecting for this to happen. Most people I know can't afford to pay such an amount of money for a new car, so the low sales level it's not a surprise for me. The electric car manufacturers should consider lowering their cars prices in order to sell them or simply enter them in a car donations program because few people are going to buy them in the current circumstances.
