Alexandra “Sascha” von Meier is a research coordinator at the California Institute for Energy and Environment (CIEE) and a professor of energy management and design at Sonoma State University. Her past research includes studies of cultural factors in technology adoption, operation of nuclear power plants, and management of nuclear materials; she currently focuses on power distribution systems, smart grid issues, and the integration of distributed and intermittent generation. Sascha received a B.A. in physics in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Energy and Resources in 1995 from UC Berkeley.
With the crisis unfolding at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, it is too soon to draw final conclusions. But watching the struggle to bring the site under control, we cannot help but wonder: What exactly is going on, and what lessons might be learned?
